Nachhaltige Pflasterdecken und Plattenbeläge – Ein Beitrag zum Ressourcenschutz – „Die älteste Straßenbauweise der Welt“

Sustainable pavements with paving stones and slabs – A contribution to resource conservation – „The oldest road construction method in the world“

Prof. Dr.-Ing.

Sustainable paving must be designed in such a way that it takes economic, ecological and social aspects into account to such an extent that no (serious) restrictions arise for future generations. They should also be as durable and resource-saving as possible. Pavements and paving slabs have been used for thousands of years for the high-quality paving of traffic areas. The potentially long service life of these pavements is demonstrated by examples where paved surfaces have been under traffic load for many decades, up to a century or more. In order to conserve resources, as little waste as possible should be produced when traffic areas are converted  or dismantled (waste avoidance). This can easily be achieved by reusing paving stones and slabs. This is often the case with (expensive) natural stone paving. With concrete paving stones, on the other hand, this is usually only the case for small-scale construction measures, e. g. as part of excavations for pipeline construction. If the paving stones and slabs are not reused, they are considered waste and are recycled in recycling plants. In the municipal sector, very extensive construction measures will be required on the pipeline network over the next 20 years in order to meet the climate targets set by the German  government, among other things. In particular, measures to create additional district heating networks and measures to expand the electricity grid should be mentioned here alongside the expansion of fiber optics. All of these are mostly measures that are carried out as part of excavations. The advantages of paving can be utilized here. Sustainability considerations would be very useful at this stage. Life cycle assessments are
available to evaluate the construction methods. Depending on the boundary conditions, various paving construction methods show a very positive global warming potential and a very low energy requirement in comparison. However, the values change depending on the assumed service life, among other things. More precise specifications are still lacking here. In addition to these aspects, other topics for assessing sustainability should also be considered. For example, the solar reflectance index for evaluating the reflective properties of surfaces and reducing urban heat islands should be given greater consideration in future. Social aspects must also be considered in the manufacturing of building products. For example, when procuring natural stone products, attention should be paid to compliance with social and labor standards by only using certified products.

Reduzierung von CO₂ im Bauprozess

Reduction of C0₂ in the construction process

Dipl.-Ing. (FH) L. Keller, Bremen

The reduction of CO2 emissions in the construction process is omnipresent and is essential in order to achieve climate goals. CO2 emissions run through the entire value chain, from the extraction of raw materials, the production of building materials, the necessary transport, the construction processes and ultimately also through dismantling and the highest possible type of reuse. Our resources in this country are finite. And that is not the only reason why it should be the top priority of everyone involved in construction to use the building materials used as sensibly and resource-efficiently as possible. We must now ensure that the building
materials we use today can be used again in the future without restrictions and for other high-quality purposes. There are many ways to achieve the goal of reducing CO2 emissions. But not all ideas, processes and construction methods are really effective, even if the calculations according to the EU's CO2 taxonomy show a reduction in CO2 emissions. But there are certainly practical ways to actually reduce CO2, even if these are undoubtedly bridging technologies to get closer to the climate goals.

New methods for assessing the conditon of road networks and accompanying infrastructure using AI

Dipl.-Ing. H. Balck, Darmstadt
Ing. C. Konzel, A-Wien
Dipl.-Ing. R. Spielhofer, A-Wien

As the waterway operator in Austria, viadonau maintains approx. 400 km of asphalted riverside paths, the so-called Treppelwege. The international Danube cycle path runs along approx. 260 km of these paths. A software-supported maintenance management system was already used in 2010 to increase road safety and for the targeted planning and prioritization of renovations. This was still based on visual surveys, which were manually transferred to the software system and evaluated there. The visual recording process tied up a lot of resources and only allowed a subjective assessment of the condition. In 2021, a new system was developed in which the condition data is recorded annually using measurement technology or evaluated using AI. In addition, a web-based management system was set up that can be used to manage the path infrastructure and carry out targeted maintenance and renewal. The following chapters present the motivations, the solutions developed and the results in more detail.

Monolithische Profile hergestellt in Gleitschalungstechnik – Vorteile und Anwendungsmöglichkeiten im Tief- und Straßenbau

Monolithic profiles manufactured with slipform technology

Dipl.-Ing. P. Borsch, Treis-Karden
Dipl.-Ing. K. Petersen, Herne

The production of monolithic profiles with slipform technology has become increasingly popular in the last couple of years. The application range has become more and more established on the market with all their advantages and application possibilities. Slipform pavers will be used for the production of monolithic profiles. With high performance machine and concrete technology, it is possible to produce low-maintenance and durable monolithic concrete profiles in a short lead time.
