The introduction of ChatGPT in late 2022 sparked widespread societal discussion about Artificial Intelligence (AI), though its scientific foundations reach back decades. In road and transportation engineering, AI technologies offer significant potential for improving traffic safety, infrastructure maintenance, and transportation efficiency. This article presents fundamental concepts of machine learning and deep learning, illustrating their practical application through current research projects at the Federal Highway Research Institute (BASt). The presented use cases range from automated driving mode recognition in real-world driving studies and AI-supported tree detection using remote sensing to the development of BIM models for bridges from point clouds. Additional projects include pavement surface condition assessment, contactless vehicle weight measurement using seismic sensors, and AI-supported tunnel safety systems. Despite promising results, challenges remain in data quality, explainability, and safety requirements, necessitating continuous methodological advancement. The examples demonstrate that AI is already successfully deployed across various research domains of road and transportation engineering, providing a foundation for informed assessment of purposeful AI implementation in this expanding field.

Ontologien zur Beschreibung des Digital Twin Straße

Ontologies for describing the digital twin road

Dipl.-Math. J. Bartnitzek, Dresden

This article presents a fundamental information model for a “Digital Twin Road” that integrates alignment elements such as axes, gradients, and cross-sections, as well as the linear positioning of objects (e. g., delineators, traffic lights) and geometric representations across the entire lifecycle of infrastructure. Building on previous work in the railway sector, the model is specified in a meta-language and transformed into ontologies that enable semantic integration, automated quality checks, and visualization. The information model adheres to principles such as Single Source of Truth, Separation of Concerns, and Versioning, addresses the limitations of existing standards (e. g., OKSTRA), and links road infrastructure planning to digital processes already established in other industries. In doing so, it opens up new opportunities for standardized interfaces, API-based workflows, and AI-supported optimizations, providing public authorities in particular with a reliable, data-driven decision-making basis.

KI-gestützte Brückengenerierung

AI-supported bridge generation

Dr. V. Appelt; Dr. A.-H. Hamdan, Dresden

The planning and construction of bridges are of great importance for the entire infrastructure and involve various labour-intensive tasks, such as collecting all the necessary planning data or creating a detailed bridge model and associated variants. Despite the uniqueness of each bridge, it would be possible to automate the modelling process by using a higher-level parametric model. However, the application of parametric design models to create similar holistic bridge models is generally insufficient, as individual components must meet specific requirements depending on the bridge design and therefore cannot be represented by a uniform parametric model. To solve this problem, a novel AI-based approach is presented. In this approach, each component in the bridge modelling is stored as a parametric template in a digital catalogue system. The catalogue system itself is implemented as a knowledge graph and is therefore machine-readable. Consequently, the knowledge graph enables the derivation of optimized component types and parameters and ensures the consistency and feasibility of bridge design. By implementing knowledge graphs in the parametric BIM platform KorFin®, the entire modelling process can be automated and additional AI services, such as a large language model, can be integrated to improve human-machine interaction and significantly reduce the intensity of manual tasks in the bridge design process.

Ermittlung von Asphaltkörpertemperaturen mittels KI

Determination of asphalt body temperatures using AI

Dr.-Ing. M. Rahimi Nahoujy; Dr.-Ing. D. Jansen, Bergisch Gladbach

Knowledge of asphalt body temperatures is one of the most important factors for the design and structural assessment of asphalt pavements. As an alternative to complex in-situ measurements, calculation methods are a suitable method for determining asphalt body temperatures. However, these methods are usually based on limited data sets and their general validity or transferability to other local situations is restricted. The main objective of the research work presented here is to develop a model for predicting temperatures at different asphalt depths. In this work, a model was trained and tested using an artificial neural network (ANN). Data measured in situ over a period of one year was used for this purpose. The model developed in this way has a high goodness of fit and represents a significant optimization of existing models.

Von der Planung bis zur Ausführung: Einsatzpotenziale und Herausforderungen von Large Language Models in Infrastrukturprojekten

From design to construction: Potentials and challenges of large language models in infrastructure projects

Dr. G. Rexhaj; Univ.-Prof. Dr.-Ing.

This article examines the use of Large Language Models (LLMs) in infrastructure construction. Based on 24 expert interviews from planning, site management, and software development, current usage patterns, potentials, and challenges are analyzed. Findings indicate that LLMs are currently applied mainly in administrative and text-based tasks, while integration into core planning and execution processes is still limited. Potentials are particularly identified in the planning phase, for example in regulatory research, specifications, explanatory reports, and text optimization. In construction execution, possible applications include quality assurance, progress monitoring, and logistics coordination. Key challenges are reliability, traceability, data protection, data sovereignty, and the lack of clear standards. LLMs can enhance efficiency and relieve professionals but require robust verification procedures and domain-specific adaptation to become a sustainable quality-assuring tool.

Laying the foundations: Organizational information management as a basis for AI in public road construction

A. Rehman, M. Sc., Homburg ; Univ.-Prof. Dr.-Ing.

resultieren substanzielle Pflichten (u. a.

This article examines the introduction of artificial intelligence in the public road sector and argues that strategic, organization-wide information management is the central prerequisite for effective and lawful applications. It starts from the observation of broad yet heterogeneous AI use, while the public sector faces specific risks due to structural constraints and shadow AI. The AI Act provides a first risk-based governance framework; however, the classification of individual systems depends on purpose and context, with safety-relevant components in road traffic typically qualifying as high-risk. To operationalize assessment and design, the paper proposes an application-oriented taxonomy that maps descriptive, predictive, prescriptive and generative uses to process phases A–G across the infrastructure life cycle. A sample-based review of current projects reveals promising but often siloed solutions without consistent organizational embedding. High-risk systems entail substantial obligations, such as risk management, documentation, logging, human oversight and data governance, that require capacity and clearly assigned responsibilities within the organization. The paper shows that these requirements can only be met through consistent data and information stewardship that codifies roles, interfaces, quality checks and evidencing. Building Information Modeling emerges as a powerful lever: a Common Data Environment (CDE), Employer’s Information Requirements (EIR/AIA) and a BIM Execution Plan (BEP/BAP) provide structured, approved and traceable data and directly support compliance under the AI Act. In this way, quality-assured training and operational datasets are produced, making bias risks, data gaps and version conflicts visible at an early stage. A phased approach is recommended: inventory AI use cases, apply risk-based classification, standardize CDE workflows, and institutionalize EIR/BEP templates as well as competency and human oversight roles. Particular attention should be paid to state and municipal organizations whose capacities may not meet the AI Act’s requirements. If regulatory diligence, information management and BIM-enabled data creation are aligned, AI can move beyond pilots to an integrated instrument that measurably improves planning, construction, operation and maintenance. Especially where organization-wide information management is absent at the municipal or state level, BIM can provide a synergistic pathway to build one.
