In order to be able to estimate the financial resources required for the maintenance of the road network, maintenance demand forecasts are carried out for a period of 15 years. Pavement Management Systems (PMS) are used for the forecast calculation for pavements. The derivation of technically and economically reasonable maintenance measures and times for sections in need of maintenance is essentially based on an analysis of causes of damage. These are described in a so-called defect class model. During the application of the existing system it became apparent that this model was severely outdated. The existing model variants were then analysed and revised. The examination and further development of the existing model variants showed that even simplified approaches for deriving maintenance measures in a decentralised context lead to plausible and comparable results at the network level.

Wiederverwendung von Asphalt – Erfordernisse zur Weiterentwicklung

Reuse of asphalt - Conditions for further development

Dipl.-Ing. Dipl.-Wirtsch.-Ing.

For 40 years the use of reclaimed asphalt pavement (RAP) makes an essential contribution to the sustainability of asphalt construction. Beside requirements on asphalt mixing plant technology, extensive preliminary investigations and an effective management of RAP are necessary to produce high grade asphalt mixes without loss of quality. The requirements and regulations for using RAP are in Germany defined by ZTV Asphalt-StB and TL Asphalt-StB and – especially for RAP – by TL AG-StB and M WA. These are mainly based on experiences of the 80´s of the last century. Due to the changing requirements on road construction – as a result of raising traffic loads and climate change especially in the last few years – the bitumen- and asphalt-properties changed significantly. In addition, the technology in asphalt mixing plants developed continuously. As a consequence, the use of RAP is reaching its limits in the regulations. This leads to partly stagnation of the amount or even lower rates of RAP,  because these new developments are not considered by the regulations. New performance-related test methods, for bitumen as well as for asphalt, are addressing the properties of RAP in a more targeted way. Furthermore, to strengthen the circular economy, we have to point out ways for using heavily aged RAP-materials in new asphalt. The technical regulations have to be adapted to the changing requirements and to the new state of the art in using RAP; not at least for increasing the sustainability of asphalt pavements. Every ton of RAP that is used more in asphalt contributes to less CO2 being released in asphalt production. For concrete pavements, several surface finishing techniques are possible, such as brushing and exposed aggregate concrete. The Next Generation Concrete Surface (NGCS) is a new technique from the United States, and developed to reduce rolling noise. Thanks to diamond blades, a negative texture is ground each time with 1 deeper groove and 4 shallow grooves in the longitudinal direction. This technique can be applied to new concrete surfaces as well as to existing pavements. The first Belgian trial section, composed of 2 different profiles, was carried out on an existing jointed concrete road with exposed aggregate surface in October 2015 on the N44 in Maldegem. The thickness and diameter of the diamond blades are the same for both profiles. The difference lies in the spacers, which are considerably narrower for the first profile. The Close Proximity (CPX) rolling noise measurements, performed immediately after treatment, show that for the first profile the noise level of cars decreased by 6 dB (A) compared to the existing surface. Compared with the reference pavement SMA-C (stone mastic asphalt with maximum aggregate size of 10 mm) the level obtained is 3 to 4 dB (A) quieter, corresponding to the type of AGTmix type I (= silent asphalt layer). For the second profile, which is rougher, the rolling noise is reduced by 2 dB (A). A year later, the difference for the first profile is 4 dB (A), while the second profile remains stable. We can therefore conclude that the NGCS is a silent pavement for cars. To ensure that the technique is sustainable, this trial section will be followed acoustically in the following years.

Analysis of the effect of roller-compaction by using image analysis methods and high-resolution surface measurements

Leandro Harries, M. Sc.; Tobias Di Turi, M. Sc., Darmstadt

In addition to the degree of compaction, post-compaction with rollers affects the homogeneity of the asphalt structure. As part of the Research-Project Robot-Straßenbau 4.0 (FE: 88.0159/2017), half-sided roller-compacted test sections were installed, which allow a direct comparison between the pre-compaction of the screed and the roller-compaction. 3DMeasurement methods and asphalt petrology were used to evaluate the test sections. It could be shown for selected asphalt mixes that the use of rollers under certain paving conditions can have a negative influence on both the evenness and the
homogeneity of the asphalt structure.
