Development of an automated system for detecting and assessing the condition of extra-urban cycle paths, taking into account new criteria specific to bicycle needs

Prof. Dr.-Ing. M. Lohmeier, Wiesbaden

The aZuR research project developed an innovative LiDAR-based system for the automated condition assessment and evaluation of rural cycling infrastructure. The aim was to increase the efficiency and accuracy of data collection while ensuring objective, repeatable, and cost-effective evaluation of cycle paths. The system integrates LiDAR sensors, high-resolution camera images, and precise GNSS coordinates, utilizing AI-driven algorithms for the automatic detection, mapping, and visualization of defects such as cracks, patches, or root fractures. An extended evaluation methodology, including a project-specific damage catalogue and digital analysis tools, was implemented. The results demonstrate that the automated approach enables broader coverage at reduced personnel and time expenditure, while achieving higher data quality compared to manual inspections. However, further development is needed for standardizing evaluation parameters and thresholds tailored to bicycle-specific characteristics. Overall, the aZuR project makes a significant contribution to the foundation of a sustainable and safe cycling infrastructure and paves the way for data-driven decisions to improve and maintain cycling facilities.

Air pollution, especially particulate matter (PM2.5), poses a significant health risk and contributes to respiratory and cardiovascular diseases. Private local transport is often cited as the main source of urban air pollution. Especially in densely populated areas, this assumption remains largely unexplored in smaller and medium-sized cities in Europe. To investigate this, the mFUND-funded project “DEUS-SmartAir” conducted a multi-year field campaign (2020–2024) in Teltow, a medium-sized city on the southern outskirts of Berlin, Germany, which is unique in Europe. One of the aims of the study was to evaluate the potential correlation between air pollutant concentrations (PM2.5, NO₂, VOCs, etc.) and local traffic volumes through real-time recording with corresponding comparisons of air quality and traffic data, divided into individual traffic participant classes (BASt 8+1 classes). As part of the project, a granular real-time measurement network consisting of 5G IoT sensors was set up. This measurement network includes AI-based and GDPR-compliant traffic cameras for monitoring traffic flow and modern sensors for measuring air quality parameters. All devices have been developed in a modular design to enable future use with open integration options for new sensor developments. Several pollutants were measured in total, including PM1, PM2.5, PM10, CO₂, NO₂, and VOCs. However, the correlation analysis between traffic and air pollutants focused primarily on PM2.5 and NO₂, as these substances have been shown to have a significant impact on health. The data was collected at 60-second intervals or aggregated from secondly values to minute averages, providing a very detailed analysis of the relationship between total traffic volume by traffic category and air quality. A preliminary analysis of PM2.5 using the Pearson correlation coefficient showed an almost universally negligible linear relationship between traffic density and PM2.5 levels. This contradicts the widely held assumption that traffic, especially private transport, is the most important source of PM2.5 in urban areas and suggests that other factors may play a more important role in influencing particulate matter concentrations. This sub-study is part of an ongoing investigation to identify and quantify the most important sources of urban air pollution. By analyzing time-stamped data over a longer period of time, we aim to uncover more complex interactions between meteorological conditions, anthropogenic activities, and air quality. The findings will contribute to the development of more targeted and effective strategies for reducing air pollution in cities worldwide.

How does land consolidation in Brandenburg make areas available for nature conservation and landscape management?

Dipl.-Ing. H. Arft; M. Zunke, M. A., Potsdam

How can land consolidation contribute to mobilizing land for nature conservation and landscape management? This paper examines the role of land consolidation procedures in the federal state of Brandenburg, with particular focus on the practical work of the Verband für Landentwicklung und Flurneuordnung Brandenburg (VLF) as a service provider to the participants’ associations. Brandenburg’s administrative model assigns extensive responsibilities to the participants’ associations, which act as implementing bodies of land consolidation and are supported by the VLF as a legally mandated specialist authority. Beyond its traditional objective of improving agricultural structures, land consolidation increasingly serves as a flexible instrument for nature and environmental protection. The paper outlines the dual character of land consolidation: the legal reorganization of ownership through parcel reallocation and the factual implementation of measures via road and watercourse planning. Using practical examples — including moor rewetting in the “Große Grabenniederung”, the renaturalization of watercourses, and the establishment of tree rows and avenues — the paper demonstrates how targeted redistribution of ownership can concentrate public land in ecologically sensitive core areas and enable voluntary, locally supported conservation measures. The legal framework under the Federal Land Consolidation Act (FlurbG) and the Brandenburg Rural Development Act provides independent mandates for landscape design, supported by instruments such as “Neugestaltungsgrundsätze“ and the “Wege- und Gewässerplan“. Key success factors include voluntariness, collective benefit, ecological suitability, land availability, secured financing and clearly defined maintenance responsibilities. The findings show that land consolidation in Brandenburg functions as an effective and adaptable tool for integrating nature conservation and landscape management into rural development processes. Its ecological potential, however, depends strongly on the commitment of local stakeholders and remains far from exhausted.

Mit zielgerichteten Innovationen zurück in die Spur: Das meinRad-System der Mainzer Mobilität

Systemic innovation and operational recovery in public bike-sharing: Insights from the meinRad system of Mainzer Mobilität

S. L. Grüner; V. Blees; C. Rutka, Wiesbaden

Back in 2012, the city of Mainz was one of the first cities in Germany to introduce a bikesharing system, called “meinRad”. After a good ten years of operation, the provider, Mainzer Verkehrsgesellschaft, felt the need to further develop and modernize the service. On the occasion of the modernization, the RheinMain University of Applied Sciences used a multi-method approach to evaluate the system modernization and conduct analyses on the potential for an increase in demand. The analyses show that the system modernization was extremely well received by meinRad users. The innovations introduced, such as a new lock system and a more modern app, together with the expansion of the range of bikes on offer, have led to a significant increase in demand after years of declining usage. At the same time, the further developments are removing significant barriers to use among previous non-users of bikesharing and are therefore able to tap into new customer potential.
