Ökologische Nachhaltigkeitspotentiale im Lebenszyklus der Straße
Environmental sustainability potentials along the life cycle of road constructions
Univ.-Prof’in Dr.-Ing. T. Kessel; C. Falter, M. Sc., Braunschweig
The increasing scarcity of resources and advancing climate change are leading to a change and restructuring of processes in every sector of the economy. Road infrastructure is an essential basis for securing private and commercial traffic flows and is consequently an important building block for ensuring the continued prosperity of economies, such as Germany as a vital business location. At the same time, infrastructure construction consumes a significant amount of resources and is a leading emitter of greenhouse gases. To ensure the long-term availability of road infrastructure while at the same time reducing the ecological impact of construction, maintenance and renewal, it is necessary to identify potential savings along the life cycle of a road structure and to exploit this potential. Road structures are characterized by particularly long useful lives and a high consumption of resources in the course of construction and maintenance measures during the operating phase. Simultaneously with the determination of the economic expenditure of the construction measures, the ecological dimension of the sustainability of each individual structure must be considered. Along the life cycle, savings potentials need to be qualified and determined quantitatively on the basis of mathematical evidence in order to form a reliable basis for decision-making for the client. The life cycle of a road construction can be divided into two phases in order to illustrate the environmental expenses incurred in the course of the construction measures, from construction to operation to disposal of the road. The linear phase runs from material extraction to the final construction of the road. The cyclical phase of the life cycle begins with the transition to the operational phase of the road. The aim of the structural maintenance and renewal measures is to ensure that the road is ready for operation at all times and thus to guarantee its availability. The scope of the research project "Environmental Sustainability Potentials in the Life Cycle of Road Constructions" includes the analysis of structural measures along the life cycle with regard to resource consumption, energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions. The savings measures for the three environmental impact categories are assigned to the individual activities along the life cycle in a modular way. The modular structure is based on the principles according to the DIN EN 15643.

On the way to digital processes and test data in road construction
Dipl.-Ing.
In the execution phase of road construction projects, a large amount of information is generated in the course of testing the used materials, the mixtures of materials and the finished work during the maintenance, reconstruction, extension or new construction of roads. In many cases, the analog usability of this information ends with the acceptance of the construction work. Since 2017, the Federal Ministry for Digital and Transport has conceived, initiated and driven forward the realization of functional and content-related additions and extensions in the OKSTRA environment in order to provide and establish a standard format as a basis for the digitization of test data in road construction. These are already available for use in other applications. With the EQUBAR system, the OKSTRA-XML data format is to be used for the generation and exchange of test data containing quality-assured information from suitability certificates and control test results, in order to be able to exchange and further process these between the involved parties. The software platform required for this purpose is scheduled to go live in 2024 and support the digital generation and use of test data in road construction.

Wasserempfindlichkeit von Sand für Asphalt
Water susceptibility of sand for asphalt
Dipl.-Ing.
The quality of fine aggregates (< 2 mm) in the asphall application area is only assigned secondary importance. Testing is currently only carried out using the methylene blue (MBF)and sand equivalent (SE (10))-method. For both methods, categories could be defined at European Ievei in the foreseeable future, to which qualities must be assigned at national Ievel. Therefore, the MBF- and SE (10)-method as weil as alternatively the method of shaking abrasion lest were evaluated within the research project “Qualifine” with regard to their informative value. For this purpose, both defined artificial and 35 natural mineral aggregates were used and evaluated with regard to mineralogical correlations. in addition, data collections from Germany for testing the water sensitivity of fine aggregates for asphall were evaluated to verify the research results. The data could confirm and extend the research results. According to this, the SE (10)-method proved to be unsuitable because it is not sensitive to high proportians of swellable clay minerals. At least in the lowervalue range (< 10 [g/kg]), the MBFtest shows an unsatisfactory spread of values and differentiability of natural materials. This also applies to the assessment of the water sensitivity Ws according to DIN EN 1744-4. The shaking abrasion test, on the other hand, is the most suitable lest for assessing the quality of fine aggregates due to its performance character and the good differentiability of the materials tested. This is Iaken into account in that the shaking abrasion test on the sand, but also on the filler, is implemented in the TL-Gestein-StB and, conversely, neither MBF nor SE (10) values have to be determined. There is still no nationwide consensus in Germany on the required values, but a table in Annex A of the TL-Gestein-StB with rock-specific ranges of values for shaking abrasion test can be used as a basis for assessing the sand
qualities.

Aktueller Sachstand des KoA-Bit zum Arbeitsplatzgrenzwert für Dämpfe und Aerosole aus Bitumen
Current status of KoA-Bit on the workplace limit value for vapors and aerosols of bitumen
Dipl.-Ing. (FH) M. Ziegenberg, Berlin
The occupational exposure limit for fumes and aerosols from bitumen, which was set by the Hazardous Substances Committee in November 2019 and suspended until December 2024, is still significant challenging for the industry. Technical protective measures have been implemented in both rolled and mastic asphalt that are suitable for reducing workplace exposures, but further efforts are needed to reliably comply with the occupational exposure limit. Warm mixed asphalt has been shown to help reduce the level of fumes and aerosols at the workplace in rolled asphalt, but compliance with the occupational exposure limit value will not be achieved without further measures. Are there influences that falsify the measurement results and how can this be reliably determined?

Multi- und Direktmodifizierung als Möglichkeit zur Konzipierung und Herstellung temperaturresilienter Asphaltschichten (Teil 1)
Multi- and direct-modification as a possibility for the design and production of temperature-resistant asphalt layers (Part 1)
Dr.-Ing. D. Gogolin; T. Lümkemann, B. Sc., Dortmund-Wickede
For the combination of climate-related (increased) demands on the performance properties of asphalt construction with simultaneously increasing addition rates of asphalt granulate in all asphalt layers, new ways of designing or modifying bitumen and asphalt mixes will be necessary in the future. One possible solution is the modification of bitumen and asphalt on site at the asphalt mixing plant (direct modification). In this way, it is possible to react flexibly to future requirements by variable additions of different additives/additives, and highly modified asphalt mixes (e. g. by multi-modification) can be designed and produced even with high proportions of asphalt granulates. In laboratory tests, based on samples from the laboratory and asphalt mixing plant, an asphalt mix containing a PmB 25/55-55 A was additionally modified with the aid of a reactive modifying additive in such a way that the deformation resistance under heat was significantly improved without negatively affecting the cold properties. Direct modification of bitumen/asphalt (e. g. with reactive modifying additives, rubber modification) at the asphalt mixing plant offers great potential for responding flexibly to future conditions in production and paving and for meeting the associated demands on the asphalt structure produced.
